It occurs to me as I write this that the trip to Israel occurred as a direct result of my involvement with Southside so I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Southside team without whom this adventure would never have happened and I would never have got to see first hand the happy and contented donkeys rescued and rehabilitated far away in the safe haven on the Moshav Gan Yoshiyya in Israel.  Run so effectively by this small UK registered charity based in East Sussex and registered in Israel as a foreign charity The Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land (www.safehaven4donkeys.org)(SHADH) was founded by Lucy Fensom  in 2000 to provide help for the donkeys of Israel, to improve their status and promote their welfare through education. It relies entirely on donations to continue this work. Unlike many larger charities this organisation has minimal running costs and consequently the funds they receive are all used to benefit the intended animals and not individuals pension funds.  As Southside Challenges go this won gets my prize to date. The odds of ever completing it seemed very much in the Bookies favour until paradoxically it was the bookies themselves that caused the first serious shortening of the odds by their offer of extremely generous sponsorship. This flattened the first hurdle before take off and covered almost all my travel costs from home to Israel and back. My second huge thank you is therefore to William Hill who again demonstrated that their interest in animals extends beyond racing into welfare. El Al were particularly helpful in allowing me extra baggage allowance and fast track check in at Heathrow which meant that I was able to take a quantity of quite literally bits (horse bits that is) and pieces (headcollars) sponsored by Saleem Akhtar of Jinnah Restaurants (The Spice Clubs etc) supplied at seriously discounted rates by Bata (Robinsons) Equestrian at Gate Helmsley. Cavalliert supplied cloth to pad harnesses and creams.  So thank you to Rupert Adams, Martin Blake, Saleem Akhtar Jacquie and Diana and the companies they represent without whose help I could not have begun to help the Donkeys.     My check in through Heathrow was fast and efficient despite the Video camera and case which I was kindly supplied by Provision in Leeds borrowed attracting a fair amount of attention.  Fortunately it tested clear for traces of explosives and was soon repacked and fast tracked through baggage check in leaving me a little time to enjoy the excellent facilities provided by EL Al and pick up a duty free bargain digital camera.  The five hour flight gave me just about enough time to work out how to use it  between  drinks dinner and more duty free dispensed with amazing efficiency by the cabin staff.  Passport clearance for entry into the country took me a little by surprise as it did not occur to me that some may think it a trifle strange to travel all that way to spend a week in a haven for donkeys helping a charity with possibly a whistle stop tour to an occasional historical site.  I advice anyone entering Israel to take with them documents confirming where and with whom and for how long they are staying. I can assure you it will save you and El Al security a lot of time and stress on the way out. More of that later.  Baggage clearance was fast and efficient and for the first time ever I walked out to be greeted by a driver displaying my name on a card. Time in Israel is 2 hours ahead of home and consequently it was past human and donkey bedtime by the time I arrived at the Haven and was welcomed by Adi Lucy’s husband who helps her in the day to day running of the sanctuary.  The donkeys in the ‘high dependency’  barn by the house did not stir. A hallow of red light indicated where the newborn foal lay but they were all so settled that it was not fair to disturb them. The adherent alarm at 2.30 in the morning did not seem to disturb them either. It stopped just as I opened the door to see what was going on and left me standing there wandering if that was a sensible thing to have done and listening to the gentle re-assuring chudding coming from the barn.  The donkeys were equally settled in the cool drizzly dawn of  the morning when a quick look over the barn rail revealed some 25 to 30 pairs of long pricked ears attached to heads buried in the hay rack. A second look revealed fit shiny bodies and it took a third fourth or fifth look for me to realise that several of these donkeys had partial or full limb amputations chronic limb deformities or severe scarring fro svere wounds.  Donkeys with limb amputations was something I had never seen before and something that I have to confess I was a bit apprehensive about. Any apprehension I had about the ethics of limb amputation in the donkey evaporated right there and then. Here were donkeys behaving normally in a loose housed herd situation behaving and coping with there disabilities without any indication of being stressed by them at all. They were not the obese flat topped unhappy animals that many of the ‘rescued’ ones that I have seen in this country sometimes become. Not one was overweight, an occasional one had the characteristic long thick coat associated with  a chronically overactive pituitary gland and a few others where obviously showing their age but still bright eyed and inquisitive and alert.  That scene alone convinced me that this charity is worth supporting. To see those donkeys in  such a natural and settled group would not allow this place to bear any other name than The Safe Haven.  Pierre a vet who lives on the Moshav and whose work and work rate I was later to admire popped in about 7 am to do his daily check round before breakfast.  The new born foal was suckling well and thriving and her mother coping amazing well following the recent emergency amputation of the right hind leg at mid cannon.  Cleo the old one with the Cushing’s problem whose breathing had been causing concern was improving and a recent amputee was healing well having been left with the stump open for a few days.   After breakfast whilst Soohn an immigrant Thai worked away raking and skipping out the barn and Abed another local helper changed dressings administered medication and dressed wounds Lucy and Adi showed me around the rest of the haven. Shelter for the 108 animals, mainly donkeys and an odd horse pony and mule in the haven is provided by simple barns constructed of tubular steel and corrugated sheets. Sand is used over hard core for the surface of the compound and larger barn. Extensive drainage work has been done and just how wet it had been just prior to my visit could be seen by the many channels cut into the sand and the spreading deltas around the drains. The braying of even the most important Jack was soon silenced by the rain as they sauntered off to take cover. We did the same a trifle more rapidly and I concluded that donkeys do not like rain any more than we do.    Hammed and Mohammed, a retired PE teacher prepared the trailer and restocked the outreach truck with dressings drugs instruments and bandages for the daysvisit to Shif El Harris. The truck a double cab 4WD pick up has been fitted with an ingenious container just big enough for one man to stand in with a large lift up door. When we arrived in the village and the crowds gathered the logic of this design became apparent one man could both dispense what was required and guard the contents at the same time though I must say that the villagers were more interested in getting their animals treated than in the contents of the van.  Within minutes of arrival 50 -60 donkeys mules and horses milled around the van.  I was pleased to see that the majority of animals presented were generally in good condition. Those that were poor or looked ‘wormy’ were wormed using Equest syringes and checked for dental disorders. The majority of animals presented on this first outreach visit I did not have bits in there mouths. The majority of them wee controlled by three chains over the nose. This causes chronic thickening and hardening of the skin that protects the underlying tissue and no evidence of pain or discomfort. In some cases the grooves become sore and irritated and in these the chains were padded with foam and bandaged by the team to allow the sores to heal much to the appreciation of the animal and their owners. I had the satisfaction of removing a stone from an infected gravel in a donkey and the dubious pleasure of carrying out an internal examination for pregnancy, unfortunately having to declare the pony mare not pregnant. Pierre who as I previously indicted worked with incredible speed and efficiency despite the general hustle and bustle was amazingly prepared to castrate a mule on the barren mountainside. I was very disappointed when it was discovered that there was insufficient anaesthetic available and the operation had to be postponed until the next visit. This was the first ever visit of the outreach team to this village and the locals presented Lucy with a commemorative shield to mark the occasion after Mohammed in true school teacher fashion had sat the children down and with the aid of a comic strip book produced by the charity explained the benefits repaid by the donkeys for being well looked after. We left the hillside village as the sun set and by the time we got back to the haven it was dark. On the way back Lucy outlined some of the problems being faced by the charity through rising rents and the search for an affordable alternative permanent base which is a real threat to the continuation of the service provided.  Without this charity there is no help for many of the working animals in the poorer areas. SHADH started the Outreach project 2 year ago and for the past year it has been part funded through a partnership arrangement with the Brooke animal charity.   The day had shown me the working of the Charity both in the Haven and on the outreach project and had highlighted some of the problems faced. I was impressed by the way the common aim of improving the welfare of the donkey cut through the diverse ethnic cultural and religious origins of those involved. To me this was a demonstration of charity at its best and I felt blessed to have been a part of the team delivering it.The following morning Adi unpacked the case of bits head collars bandages creams and cloth I had brought out courtesy of EL Al. The number of bits and head collars brought gasps of grateful surprise and the cloth and creams from Diana of Cavalliert were well received.  Lucy appreciated the Gauber UK humane spider catcher (she hates spiders) and Robert took immediately to Ian James’s Greedy cow books. Then there were dressings to change cheeks to clean out feet to poultice donkeys to groom and the truck to restock (not forgetting the anaesthetic)Tuesdays outreach visit was to Haja which is in an area that has been visited several times. The general hustle and bustle was much the same a the previous day and in addition I had the pleasure of being able to make use of both a bit and a head collar that I had brought from England. Thanks to Saleem and BATA two animals got instant benefit from their generosity that day.  I got to practice my dental skills on a mule for the first time in my life and in return got a ride on a striking coloured Arab pony. Unfortunately Thursdays outreach project visit to Hal Hul south of Jerusalem had to be postponed due to the appalling weather and lack of shelter in the area but it did give us the opportunity to go collect a load of carrots for the donkeys in the Haven from a packing station at nearby Netanya. Unfortunately there was not time to take up Mohammed’s offer of a cup of tea at his home in Taybe where one of the Haven’s resting stations is located so I did not get to see that functioning. I hope to do so next time I go out.I confess that I was grateful that I did not have to try and explain why I had been to Taybe to the security agents at Tel Aviv airport on the way out. It took enough explaining why I had taken the opportunity whilst in Israel to visit Lake Kisseret and Jerusalem. I have to say that if you want to fly on as safe an airline as possible I can vouch first hand for the thoroughness of the El Al security agents . They were polite and civil at all times as they went trough me and my luggage with a fine tooth comb despite my inability to explain why an ageing English vet would want to visit Israel to see some donkeys and wander around Galilee and Jerusalem alone. I am pleased to say that my computer and other equipment was returned exactly as promised and despite the close call the rest of my baggage arrived at the same time as I did at Heathrow.  I was glad to be able to engross myself in The Brothers by Ian Lennox which captivated me as I read it from cover to cover during the flight back. It completely took over my consciousness as my adrenalin levels which peaked when I was convinced I had missed my flight settled to more normal levels and stopped me worrying about the laptop and other bits I had been asked to leave in Tel Aviv for further security checks.   The Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land is a charity that was set up to provide help for the donkeys of Israel. To improve their status and promote welfare by education. I have seen first hand the effective way it delivers its mission statement.   I will have no hesitation in flying out again and taking as many bits headcollars hoof picks dressings and bandages as I possibly can.Above all this charity needs funds please visit their web site www.safehaven4donkeys to see how you can help. I can assure you that your donations will be well used to help the donkeys in the Holy Land.   Return trip to Safe haven for Donkeys 10th June 2007 I determined on my return from a week in Israel in March that I would return and two months of planning took me on the afternoon of Saturday 9th June to the Hayward’s Heath head quarters of the Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land (SHADH).  This simple rented wooden office and store room is the uk base for SHADH and where Wendy (Wendy Ahl 75% of the uk staff of SHADH)  spends 37 hours a week efficiently coordinating the worldwide fund raising that supports the sanctuary in Gan Yoshiyya.Here we did our best our best to cram as many of the accumulated supplies gathered there   into my suitcase, along with the remaining head collars and bits kindly donated by Saleem Akhtar (Jinnah.co.uk) and bandages padding and tack from Barbara Streather (Nee Pulleyn York) that I had brought down from Yorkshire. El Al had, as for my first visit, allowed me extra baggage to enable transport of much needed equipment out to the sanctuary.  Penicillin, animalintex nose chain padding sleeves, gamgee, bandages creams gels and fly repellents from the Hunter range donated by Spotless uk who now distribute the Humane Spider catcher previously marketed by Guaber and already much appreciated by Lucy were packed and recorded. This helped my passage through security at Stanstead, where amazingly I was recognised by the security officer who checked my baggage at Heathrow on my previous trip. Martin from El Al had kindly informed security that I would be carrying equipment and consequently security clearance although thorough was smooth relaxed and easy.Unfortunately the flight was delayed for 2 hours which meant that by the time I arrived by taxi at Gan Yoshiyya I was well tired. I have yet to master the art of sleeping on planes.There was no outreach project planned for Monday and after brief ’hello agains’ ‘andwelcome backs’, a quick check on Valentine and her new foster sister followed by agood hot shower in the visitors annex I was soon flat out catching up on lost sleep.   Soonenough there were healing wounds to attend to, a sore eye and a lame donkey to look at. It was good to wander around the contented donkeys and catch up with old friends. Tuesday there was more work in the sanctuary. Pierre the local vet arrived at 7.00am forhis regular check round and we were able to discuss the poorly eye. We decided againstany surgical intervention as the condition was improving and the lame donkey far less so.The visiting donkey dentist Shufe was due to be working on the premises for the next few days and it was good to be able to help out. I learned a novel way to adjust the height difference between human and donkey which has always made donkey teeth rasping a back breaking job. Simply dig a hole in the ground to stand in. I was well impressed byAbed’s Donkey Stocks. These he had made fromscratch and the hinged swinging side was a stroke ofdesign genius when it came to getting reluctant donkeys in.One big problem that was not evident on my first visit was theaggressive nature of the local flies. They are remorseless inattacking any wound or sore and particularly aggressive on thelegs.  Even when there is no apparent wound they will attackthe legs of the donkeys until there is. Fortunately the staff atthe sanctuary have found an excellent fly spray formula44 which at least gives some temporary relief.  We are now looking for a spray that will prevent the problem with less frequent application.Whilst I was there final negotiations where in progress over thepurchase of the premises which have been the home of the safe haven for the past years.This did give me the opportunity to take an evening trip into Tel Aviv and I must admitthat despite not being enamoured with cities I found the evening atmosphere relaxed casual and enjoyable. I sat with some friends sat outside a Café in central Tel Aviv and was amazed by the variety people strolling around, exercising their dogs.  I felt relaxed warm and in real holiday mode.  This was fortunate in that it was rather late when we left the night club and I was glad that there was no early start planned for the following day. Lucy had earlier expressed concern over the quality of life of 4 of the long term inmates.I had examined Sybil in March. She had been having repeated bouts of infection affectingher lungs and showed many of the signs of advanced Cushing ’s disease. It was a tributeto the skill of her carers that she did not suffer from laminitis and was still in reasonablecondition despite her age.  She had unfortunately developed a significant heart murmur with associated circulatory difficulties and consequently I reluctantly advised that she be put down humanely soon. I had to advise similarly for poor Alfie whose stifle injury had resulted in alkalosis of his left hind limb in such a position as he was no longer able to get up or down unaided.  The resulting pressure sores could no longer be controlled. They both went together and are now buriedon the sanctuary that came to be their home and salvation. The other two I am pleased to say were quite able to enjoy the peace and tranquillity at Safe Haven for a while longer.I spent a wonderful evening with Muhammed visiting his home where the Taybe treatment centre is based, some of his friends with the most beautiful Arab horses and honey reputed to solve all manner of male ageing afflictions. Sampling the honey and the delights of local delicacies inTaybe and other local villages was a ‘night to remember’, as Muhammed remarked on our way to Hebron the following day (though he did confess to stopping off for more coffee after dropping me of and then not getting home until the early hours of the morning.) Thursday was to be a novel experience for us all. This was the outreach project’s first visit to Hebron and the first of a revised format visit as requested by Brooke Animal Hospital as part sponsors of the outreach project. Thursday morning was somewhat hectic with several donkeys to treat before leaving and the journey took longer than expected. Consequently the welcoming committee took a little persuading that before any treatment could commence Hammad was to address the assembled crowd on general care and first aid of their animals. The threat of no treatment at all produced the desired result and I was impressed by the general level of attentiveness of the crowd in the shelter of a nearby metal workshop. Hammad performed his task admirably  Examination and treatment of the animals some of which were trucked in on an open lorry was soon underway.Some of the animals presented were past our help. This seemed to be beyond the understanding of their owners who it appeared had done all that they could with the limited resources available to them. This I found the most distressing aspect of the day as education without resources would appear to have little benefit to animal or to the owner.  It was with considerable relief that time caught up with us and a halt was called and I began to think about the plane I had to catch early on Friday morning.  We were not though allowed to leave before we had enjoyed the excellent local hospitality. Coffee, chicken coffee and rice and more coffee.  I left having seen that obtaining the trust of those whose animals need care is the first essential in helping those animals and that can only be obtained by demonstrating not only the willingness but the ability to help through treatment. There is a balance between treatment and education and on both of my visits to Israel and the territories I have seen this charity operating from a small wooden office in Sussex with one and a half full time staff on a shoe string fulfil their mission statement to improve the welfare and status of the donkeys of Israel through education combined with compassionate and available treatment. Hello All,Well some 30 hours have just sped by in such a whirlwind of experience and interest that I am so grateful to you all without whom this visit would not have been.I will try to send some of the still photos of the sanctuary the animals and the staff that do such an amazing job out here though my computer skills do not improve and neither it appears does my photography so it may take some time to do so.In the short time I have spent here I am already realising that much of my assessment of animal welfare is based on my own concepts of ‘normality’ or traditional husbandry practices that I accept as normal. The reality here has already made me re-assess some of those conceptsI shall endeavour to send fuller reports in the fullness of time but at this stage I would like to thank William Hill and El Al for getting me and my luggage here. Marketing executive for Burgess Excel animal foods Rachel Reed proved to be a creative inspiration which led to the Media Matters team of  writer Dean Wilkinson ( www.deanwilkinson.co.uk   ) &  musician/Saturday Producer David Eagle developing an ode to Rachel, which was compiled line-by-line by actor/comedian Charlie Ross ( www.charlieross.co.uk ),actor/Lamda tutor Sarah Huntley, Actor/Radio producer Lisa Bowerman, Bafta award winning television Director Graeme Harper , Nottingham correspondent Jenny Kightley & actor Samantha Bond ( currently filming `The Sarah Jane Adventures` for BBC1, and supporting Alex Hanson in his West End role of Captain Von Trapp in `The Sound of Music`- well if you can be Miss Moneypenny for 4 Bond movies  & Lisa Shore in Distant Shores ! the von Trapps should be a doddle !)- The final version reads

Meanwhile Shelagh Jones ( seen here with media advisor and Southside friend Mark Aldridge ) went `on location` to the University of Lincoln`s Siren Base ( home of Southside`s sister station Siren FM www.sirenonline.co.uk  ) to record another `Wheel of Life` with BAFTA award winning director Graeme Harper, who also met up with the managing editor of Siren, Andrew David,shared some thoughts on the future of the media with wife Bernadette Harper & Senior Lecturer in Media,Culture & Communications Dave Kenyon provided some input into the selection of the new Siren logo AND gave a fascinating lecture and seminar on his terrific work with Doctor Who-speaking of which !!

A cracking haunted leisure lounge with Craig Boddy , David  Eagle & George Sunley sought to exorcise any Patientline Channel 1 technical glitches and the creator/owner of the award winning chain of Jinnah restaurants Saleem Jinnah was duly presented with the 2007 Southside yearbook before Alex Lewczuk  & Louise Rigg made their way to ` The Spice Club` for an amazing Sunday Jinnah Special in Beadlam.

Animal Heat Stroke Warning
With August forecast to be even warmer than July please be warned that it is not only dogs in cars that are at risk from heat stroke.
It is important to consider those animals that are left at home.  They can not open the windows or doors.
Those in cages and tanks can not use the cooling methods they would use in the wild.
Snakes lizards rats mice gerbils hamsters rabbits cannot burrow into the earth or lie in scrapes to loose heat by conduction.
The whole cage is as warm as or warmer than the room even if it is not in direct sunlight.
Parrots cannot find the natural shade or coolness of the forest canopy.
Fish cannot find the cool depths or currents

It is not sufficient to put on a fan consider a mobile air conditioning unit.

Think how the animal would keep cool in the wild

Some suggestions from Hickstead and Local Rider Magazine that may help avoid causing some animal’s unnecessary distress

1 Put the cage or part of the cage onto an uninsulated hearth or cool solid floor.

2 Hang the bird cage in the natural coolness of a shrubbery.

3 Allow caged animals into a cat and fox proof pen with scrapes allowing the animal contact with cooler damp shaded earth.

4 Allow access to flowing water.

5 Buy a mobile air  conditioning unit

6 Install a fountain (water fountains encourage cats to drink)

Matters became even more surreal when Julian was joined by the wonderful soul group Serotonin aka Chris Goldhawk, Russell Kedwin & fabulous vocalist Azadeh Khaiigh ( www.serotoninmusic.co.uk ) with a marvellous entourage anchored by Dave T & manager Donovan Dwyer, ably assisted by Naz Arga, Nathan T & photographer Emma Wells-Colyer
Sadly, despite the assistance of the Hamley`s Easter Bunny, both Tallulah Rendall & Claire Sweeney were prevented by telephone gremlins from connecting with Serotonin- however a full thumbs up to the group and the new Welsh Rugby Coach was given by our Oxford/Cardiff correspondent Danielle Bux who`s off to Geneva this week, and the terrific Leah Newman ( www.leahnewman.co.uk )has provisionally agreed to a joint singing session with the band !
Fantastic to welcome back New York Correspondent Peter Franklin ( www.gabby.com ) and looking forward to a slightly longer less crackly link very soon, whilst Doctor Who/Bafta award winning Director Graeme Harper talked about his forthcoming work on the new series of Robin Hood.

TV Company seeks Brits who are going abroad to realise an overseas romance…

A new TV documentary is looking for Brits who are leaving the UK for an
overseas love. Mentorn, one of the UK’s leading independent TV production
companies, is scouring the nation for long distance love stories that are
about to become foreign affairs.

Executive Producer Rob Carey says: “Everyone remembers the film Shirley
Valentine where housewife Shirley’s holiday romance turns serious and she
decides to stay on a Greek Island to be with her Greek lover.  Leaving for
Love is looking for men and women who are about to move abroad to be with
their overseas lover.”

The documentary will follow their adventure as they say goodbye to family and
friends, pack up their UK belongings and set off overseas, to be reunited
with their loved one and begin their new life. We are looking for people who
are willing to share their experience, both the good times and the bad, and
have their love documented for posterity.

Exciting items coming up in 2006 dept- Just Spoke with one of our key LA correspondents, the amazingly talentedKelly Duncan whose movie `Civic Duty` is currently in post-production. Kelly will hopefully be talking about shooting in Vancouver & more in the next few weeks.

The Countdown is also on for the new series of Doctor Who, with 4 fantastic episodes directed by true friend of Southside Graeme Harper-

Returning To Southside`s broom cupboard this week, Liz Fenwick ( above ) ably assisted by Angela Soakell, Dr Jim Kyaw-Tum & Craig Boddy.

Ruth Dawson will also be making her Southside debut en route to Newcastle from Southampton via the University of Lincoln`s Media, Culture & Communications Dept.
